Chapter 4 - The Sealed Board File
The sealed company file sat farther down the table, untouched beside a silver candlestick.
It was black.
Thicker than the postnuptial folder.
Bound with a plain clasp.
No readable label.
No exposed signature.
No visible clause.
But the people who recognized it could not stop looking at it.
Emma watched them.
The senior investor in the dark green gown looked once, then looked away too fast.
The retired judge beside her pressed his lips together.
The company director near the file folded his hands and stared at the table.
Victoria noticed all of it and grew furious.
“Stop looking at that,” she snapped.
No one admitted they had been.
That made it worse.
Emma turned toward Victoria.
“Why?”
Victoria’s nostrils flared.
“Because this dinner is about your responsibility to this family.”
Emma stepped closer to the table again, but not close enough for Daniel to reach her.
“My responsibility?”
Victoria leaned forward, eyes wide with theatrical rage.
“You live in this house. You wear that ring. You carry the Hale name. You will not stand here and threaten what generations built.”
Emma’s face softened for one second.
Not with forgiveness.
With clarity.
“You mean what you built without reading the last signature.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Victoria’s wineglass trembled.
A crystal sound rang faintly from her fingers shaking against the stem.
“Careful,” Daniel said.
Emma turned to him.
“I was careful for years.”
The sentence landed between them.
She did not explain those years.
No flashback.
No private scene.
Only the weight of what had accumulated before this dinner.
Daniel knew.
Victoria knew.
The board suspected.
Emma touched her wedding ring with her thumb.
“You wanted me here because you needed a witness who looked weak enough to blame.”
Daniel said nothing.
Victoria laughed again, but her throat was dry now.
“You are nothing without this family.”
Emma looked at the sealed file.
Then back at Victoria.
“Then why are you afraid of asking the board?”
No one spoke.
The candles flickered.
