Chapter 8 - Victoria Loses the Table

Victoria had ruled this table for decades.

Every holiday.

Every investor dinner.

Every birthday disguised as a networking opportunity.

She decided who sat where, who spoke first, whose glass was refilled, which wife was praised, which employee was ignored, which apology was required, which truth was never mentioned.

Now the table no longer listened.

That was her real humiliation.

Not Emma’s words.

Not Daniel’s panic.

The table.

The twelve people who once laughed carefully at Victoria’s remarks now watched Emma.

Victoria’s face twisted violently.

“You think pregnancy makes you untouchable?”

Emma’s gaze hardened.

“No. I think humanity should have.”

The sentence cracked something open.

One of the relatives covered her mouth.

A board attorney lowered his head.

Daniel whispered, “Mother.”

Victoria spun toward him.

“Do not mother me now.”

The ugly phrase revealed too much.

Daniel stiffened.

Emma watched the fracture widen.

Victoria’s power had always depended on Daniel needing her approval more than he needed justice.

Tonight, even he looked afraid of her.

Emma stepped away from the chair with military-like precision.

The hem of her navy gown moved smoothly against the marble floor.

She kept the black folder pressed against her side.

Her other hand rested over her stomach.

Not weak.

Protective.

Unapologetic.

She looked toward the sealed board file.

No one touched it.

Not yet.

The final answer remained hidden.

Victoria’s voice dropped into a hiss.

“What did you do?”

Emma turned toward her.

“I listened.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“To whom?”

Emma looked at the board.

“To the people you thought would never speak in front of me.”

Several directors looked down.

That was not a confession.

Not yet.

But it was enough.

Victoria’s face drained another shade.

Daniel’s mouth opened, but no sound came.

Emma did not reveal names.

She did not reveal numbers.

She did not reveal clauses.

She only let their reactions do what documents could not do as quickly.
