Chapter 7 - The Board Begins to Move

The board moved like people trying not to be seen moving.
A chair shifted.
A cuff adjusted.
A hand reached toward a water glass and stopped.
The director nearest the sealed file stood halfway, then sat again.
Emma saw every movement.
Victoria did too.
Her control depended on stillness.
As long as everyone remained seated, silent, and ashamed, she could pretend the dinner was hers.
But the room had started breathing differently.
One board member turned to another with a look that asked a question no one dared speak.
Whose signature?
That was the question Emma had placed in the center of the table.
Not the percentage.
Not the clause.
Not the final decision.
Only the question.
Daniel recognized its danger.
“Board matters are not discussed in front of family.”
Emma looked around the table.
“Then why are the board members here?”
Silence.
Victoria looked as if she might explode.
“They are here because your behavior affects the company.”
Emma nodded.
“Exactly.”
The word trapped Victoria inside her own argument.
Daniel stared at his mother.
For the first time, blame passed between them.
Not spoken.
Visible.
Victoria had pushed too hard.
Daniel had agreed.
Now neither could retreat without looking guilty.
Emma turned toward the sealed file.
“I am not asking anyone to reveal what is inside.”
The directors stiffened.
“I am asking whether they remember who must be asked before anything is surrendered.”
Daniel’s lips parted.
“Stop.”
Emma looked at him.
“No.”
The room shook with the finality of it.
Victoria’s hand reached blindly for the table edge.
Her nails scraped the polish.
The woman who had leaned over Emma’s pregnant stomach now needed furniture to stay upright.
Emma’s voice softened into something colder than anger.
“You called me disappointing.”
Victoria said nothing.
“You called my children a burden.”
Still nothing.
“You put a pen in my hand and expected me to sign myself smaller.”
Daniel looked down.
Emma lifted the black folder slightly.
May you like
“But you forgot I learned to read before I learned to obey you.”
