Chapter 3 - Daniel’s Hand on the Folder

Daniel had always loved documents when they worked for him.
Contracts.
Board minutes.
Trust summaries.
Shareholder notes.
Postnuptial agreements printed on expensive paper and placed before people who were expected to sign because resistance would make dinner unpleasant.
Tonight, the document had not obeyed him.
The black folder sat under Emma’s arm now, no longer a tool of pressure but proof of attempted coercion.
Daniel reached for it again.
Emma stepped farther away from the table.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Not because he respected the word.
Because twelve board members were watching.
Victoria saw his hesitation and hated it.
“Daniel,” she snapped, “control your wife.”
The room inhaled.
Emma’s face went still.
Daniel looked at the guests, then at his mother, then at Emma.
“She’s upset.”
Emma’s voice came low.
“I am standing right here.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“Then act like it.”
For one heartbeat, the room looked at her stomach.
Emma noticed.
The pregnancy had been used all evening as a reason to dismiss her.
Too emotional.
Too fragile.
Too dependent.
Too occupied with children to understand corporate language.
Victoria’s mouth twisted again.
“You should be grateful we’re giving you a clean arrangement.”
Emma looked at the gold pen lying near a crystal glass.
“Clean?”
Her laugh was quiet.
Dangerous.
“You forced that pen into my hand in front of your board.”
Victoria’s face flushed.
“I offered you security.”
“You offered me silence.”
Daniel’s palm struck the table again.
Crystal glasses shook.
“Enough.”
Emma did not flinch.
That unsettled him most.
She had flinched before.
Not tonight.
The board member nearest the sealed file adjusted his cuff.
Emma saw his eyes flick to the file.
Daniel saw Emma see it.
His panic sharpened.
“What did you bring here?”
Emma looked at him.
“The same thing you did.”
He frowned.
“A folder?”
“No.”
She turned toward the board.
“A decision.”
Victoria’s fingers tightened around her wineglass.
Daniel’s confidence cracked another inch.
The sealed file remained closed.
No ownership percentage revealed.
No inheritance clause spoken.
No board decision made.

Only fear growing around the table like smoke.
