Chapter 5 - The Pen on the Table

The gold pen lay between two crystal glasses like a failed command.
Victoria stared at it.
That pen had been chosen carefully.
Heavy.
Elegant.
Expensive enough to make surrender feel ceremonial.
Daniel had placed it beside the folder before dinner began.
Victoria had waited for the exact moment to force it into Emma’s hand.
They had imagined the scene one way.
Emma crying.
Daniel cold.
Victoria victorious.
The board uncomfortable but silent.
A signature placed neatly beneath pressure.
A pregnant wife escorted upstairs while the adults discussed business.
Instead, the pen lay abandoned, and Emma stood beside her chair unbroken.
Victoria reached for it again.
Emma’s voice stopped her.
“Touch it again and every person at this table becomes a witness twice.”
Victoria froze.
Daniel turned sharply toward Emma.
“Do not threaten my mother.”
Emma looked at him.
“She threatened your children’s mother.”
Daniel’s expression flickered.
The mention of children unsettled him because it forced the board to hear what the folder had tried to reduce into legal language.
A wife.
A pregnancy.
A family.
A company.
A future being negotiated over candlelight by people who expected Emma to collapse quietly.
One of the attorneys leaned toward Daniel.
“Perhaps we should pause.”
Victoria snapped, “No.”
Emma looked at the attorney.
“Why pause now?”
He swallowed.
“I believe the board should review—”
“Do not say another word,” Daniel cut in.
The attorney sat back.
Emma watched Daniel silence him and felt the room understand more.
Daniel was not afraid of drama.
He was afraid of review.
Victoria’s hands shook harder.
Her lips trembled with fury.
“You ungrateful girl.”
Emma’s eyes flashed.
“I am thirty-two years old, Victoria.”
“You behave like a child.”
“No,” Emma said. “You treat me like one because children sign what adults place in front of them.”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
Closed.
The board member nearest the sealed file slowly reached toward it.
Victoria’s face went white.
“Leave that where it is.”
Emma did not smile.
She did not need to.
The board member stopped, but his hand remained near the file.
The message was clear.
The file would open.

Just not yet.
