Chapter 10 - Evelyn Left Instructions

Evelyn Whitaker’s will was not revealed.

No inheritance value was named.

Ethan’s financial consequences were not shown.

The next morning’s legal meeting remained unseen.

No final outcome arrived.

The story ended on the cold terrace of an exclusive rooftop restaurant in downtown Charleston, with city lights reflecting against the glass doors and the ruined anniversary table glowing inside under chandelier light.

Grace Caldwell stood in her navy off-the-shoulder gown, blonde hair whipped by the wind, divorce papers gripped in one hand and her smartphone pressed to her ear.

Her wedding ring remained inside on the table, beside the thick white envelope Ethan had slammed onto her plate.

Her face was still wet with tears.

But the devastation had changed.

Something like hope had appeared.

Dangerous.

Unanswered.

Strong enough to make Ethan stop smiling.

Through the glass, Ethan stood frozen in his black suit, one hand near the terrace door, his handsome face losing color as he watched Grace listen to the call.

Victoria stood behind him in ivory satin and pearls, panic beginning to show through the mask of superiority she had worn all evening.

Miranda lowered her champagne flute, red gown catching candlelight, her triumphant expression gone.

The guests remained silent.

No one toasted.

No one laughed.

No one knew why the discarded wife suddenly looked less abandoned than everyone inside.

Samuel Greene’s grave voice came through the phone.

“Mrs. Caldwell, Evelyn left urgent instructions concerning you.”

Grace’s fingers tightened around the divorce papers.

Ethan saw her reaction.

He did not know the will.

He did not know the instructions.

He did not know what Evelyn had planned.

But he finally understood one thing:

His anniversary cruelty had triggered something he had never expected.

Grace looked through the glass directly at him.

May you like

This time, she did not look broken.

And Ethan, Victoria, and Miranda all looked away first.
