Chapter 6 - The Ring Beside the Envelope

Grace’s wedding ring sat beside the white legal envelope on the table.

Small.

Bright.

Painful.

Ethan stared at it as if it had become a question he had not prepared to answer.

He had imagined the ring as a trophy of defeat.

Grace removing it would prove she was broken.

Guests would whisper.

Victoria would sigh with satisfaction.

Miranda would glow.

Ethan would look dignified, decisive, free.

But now the ring seemed to accuse him.

Not loudly.

Worse.

Quietly.

A server approached, then stopped when Victoria glared.

No one touched the ring.

No one touched the envelope.

The anniversary candles burned between them like witnesses.

Ethan picked up his champagne flute and set it down again without drinking.

His hand was no longer steady.

Victoria noticed.

“Control yourself.”

He looked at her sharply.

“You don’t know who called her.”

“Then find out.”

“How?”

Victoria’s lips tightened.

The question exposed the problem.

Grace was outside.

The glass doors separated them.

The guests were watching.

Ethan could not storm out, snatch the phone, and call it concern. Not now. Not after making a public scene. Not with forty people suddenly alert to every move.

He had wanted witnesses when they favored him.

Now witnesses restricted him.

Grace understood that from the terrace.

Samuel’s voice came again.

“Mrs. Caldwell, do not confront him about Evelyn. Do not mention the morning meeting. Do not speculate about value or consequence.”

Grace almost smiled bitterly.

“You sound like you’ve done this before.”

“With men who think signatures are the same as control? Yes.”

Grace’s grip tightened around the papers.

“Was Evelyn trying to protect me?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“She left instructions concerning you.”

Not yes.

Not no.

Enough.

Grace breathed in the cold Charleston night.

Inside, Ethan shifted.

Miranda touched his arm.

He pulled away without thinking.

She saw it.

Victoria saw it.

Grace saw it too.

The fracture widened.
