Grace had not heard Evelyn Whitaker’s name in months.
Not since the memorial.
Not since the final estate notices Ethan had dismissed as irrelevant old-lady drama.
Evelyn had been wealthy, private, and feared in the polite way powerful women are feared by families who want access but not accountability.
Victoria had hated her.
That alone should have told Grace more.
Ethan had called Evelyn difficult.
Miranda had once laughed and said old women with lawyers always think they’re queens.
Grace had never joined in.
Evelyn had frightened her too, but not cruelly.
She had frightened Grace because she saw too much.
Now, through the phone, Evelyn’s name became a hand reaching across the ruined anniversary table.
Samuel said, “She was very specific about contacting you after a public separation event.”
Grace blinked.
“She knew it would be public?”
“She understood Mr. Caldwell’s preferred method of control.”
Grace looked through the glass.
Ethan’s face had tightened into a mask of false composure.
Victoria whispered aggressively into his ear.
Miranda stood beside them, clutching her champagne flute like it might explain her place there.
Grace’s voice became quiet.
“What did she leave?”
Samuel did not answer directly.
He could not reveal it here.
The will remained hidden.
The value remained hidden.
The morning meeting remained untouched.
“I will explain when the conditions are met.”
Grace looked at the divorce papers.
“Are these conditions?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
The word moved through her like lightning without sound.
Inside, Ethan finally stepped toward the terrace doors.
Victoria caught his arm again.
This time he pulled free.
Grace watched him approach.
Samuel seemed to hear the change in her breathing.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
“He’s coming.”
“Do not hang up.”
Grace’s hand tightened around the phone.
She did not move.
Ethan reached the glass.
He did not open it yet.
