Chapter 5 - Miranda Lowers the Champagne Glass

Miranda Sterling had spent the evening believing she had won.

She wore dark red because Ethan liked red.

She held champagne because victory required something to toast.

She stood close enough to him that no one at the restaurant could mistake her place in his life.

Grace had looked wounded when she saw them together.

Miranda had enjoyed that.

Not because she loved Ethan deeply.

Because winning over a wife felt like proof of power to women who mistook selection for worth.

Now Miranda watched Grace on the terrace and felt the shape of victory warp.

“She’s not crying anymore,” Miranda whispered.

Ethan snapped, “She is crying.”

“No. She’s… listening.”

The difference mattered.

Victoria shot Miranda a cold look.

“Do not help her sound interesting.”

Miranda’s face flushed.

But she did not lift her champagne glass again.

Grace turned slightly and looked through the glass.

Her eyes met Miranda’s first.

Not Ethan’s.

Not Victoria’s.

Miranda felt exposed.

Grace did not look jealous.

That would have been easier.

She looked as if Miranda had become a smaller part of a much larger mistake.

Samuel’s voice remained in Grace’s ear.

“There is a meeting scheduled for morning, but I need you to preserve every document he gave you tonight.”

Grace looked at the envelope through the window.

“My ring is still there.”

“That does not matter.”

Grace swallowed.

“It mattered to me.”

Samuel’s voice softened.

“I know.”

Those two words nearly broke her again.

Not because they explained anything.

Because they acknowledged that this was not merely legal.

This was marriage.

Ten years.

Anniversary candles.

The man she once believed would grow old beside her choosing applause for her heartbreak.

Grace closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“Should I come to your office?”

“Not tonight.”

“Then what do I do?”

Samuel paused.

“Let him wonder.”

Grace turned back toward the glass.

Ethan was watching her with dawning fear.

She held his gaze.

For the first time since the envelope hit her plate, she did not look away.
