Chapter 2 - The Table That Watched Her Break

Grace did not fall on the terrace.
She wanted to.
Her knees almost gave way the moment the glass doors closed and the restaurant noise became muffled behind her. Inside, the candles still flickered over the anniversary table. The white roses still looked expensive. The champagne still looked untouched.
Everything was beautiful.
That made the cruelty worse.
She clutched the divorce papers to her chest with one hand and the smartphone to her ear with the other. Cold wind tore through her blonde hair, pulling loose strands across her tear-streaked face.
“Who is this?” she whispered.
The man’s voice remained calm.
“Samuel Greene. I represented Evelyn Whitaker.”
Grace’s breath caught.
Evelyn.
The name entered her body like a memory she had not been brave enough to open.
Inside the restaurant, Ethan’s posture changed. He still stood beside Miranda, but his attention had shifted fully to the terrace. Victoria noticed and turned too. Miranda lowered her glass just enough for jealousy to become fear.
Samuel spoke again.
“I’m sorry for the timing, Mrs. Caldwell, but this could not wait.”
Grace turned slightly away from the window, shielding the call from the people watching her through glass.
She had been humiliated publicly.
That had been Ethan’s design.
He could have given her papers at home.
He could have spoken quietly.
He could have ended their marriage like someone who remembered she had once loved him.
Instead, he had chosen an anniversary dinner.
A table full of witnesses.
His mother smiling.
His mistress waiting.
He wanted Grace remembered as the discarded wife who cried over dessert.
But Samuel Greene had called before that image could harden.
Grace swallowed.
“Evelyn is dead.”
There was a pause.
“Yes.”
The word carried grief.
Grace closed her eyes.
Evelyn Whitaker had been one of the only women in Ethan’s circle who never treated Grace like furniture. She had been stern, old-fashioned, and impossible to impress, but she had once squeezed Grace’s hand during a charity dinner and said, “You listen more than they deserve.”
Grace had not understood then.
Now she looked through the glass at Ethan, Victoria, and Miranda.
Maybe Evelyn had.
“Why are you calling me?” Grace asked.
Samuel’s voice lowered.
“Because Mrs. Whitaker anticipated this.”
Grace opened her eyes.

Inside, Ethan’s smile was gone completely.
