Chapter 9 - The Glass Between Them

Ethan stood on one side of the glass.

Grace stood on the other.

Charleston’s skyline reflected across both of their faces, making it look for a moment as if they occupied the same world.

They did not.

He touched the door handle.

Grace lifted the phone slightly.

Not threatening.

Not hiding.

Simply letting him see she had not ended the call.

Ethan’s hand froze.

His eyes dropped to the divorce papers in her other hand.

Then to her face.

The devastated woman he had sent outside was changing in front of him.

Still wounded.

Still tearful.

But no longer alone inside the wound.

He mouthed through the glass, “Who is it?”

Grace did not answer.

Inside, Victoria and Miranda watched from the table.

Victoria’s face had gone rigid.

Miranda’s triumph had collapsed into unease.

Guests pretended not to stare, yet every head remained angled toward the terrace.

Samuel’s voice stayed close to Grace’s ear.

“Do not tell him my name unless you choose to.”

Grace looked at Ethan.

For ten years, he had made choices for both of them.

Who they dined with.

Which invitations mattered.

Which friends were embarrassing.

Which feelings were inconvenient.

Which rooms she belonged in.

Now Samuel gave her one choice, and it felt larger than the skyline.

Ethan opened the terrace door one inch.

Cold wind moved into the restaurant.

“Grace,” he said, but the locked dialogue had already been spent; the word appeared more on his lips than as part of the scene.

Grace stepped back.

Not far.

Enough.

He noticed.

That small distance wounded his pride.

Samuel spoke again.

“Keep the documents. Keep the envelope. Keep your ring wherever you choose. Do not surrender any of it to him tonight.”

Grace looked at the ring on the table behind Ethan.

The symbol of marriage.

The envelope beside it.

The audience around it.

Then she looked back at her husband.

For the first time, he looked afraid of what she might know.
