Chapter 4 - Victoria’s Victory Turns Thin

Victoria Caldwell did not like waiting.
She liked conclusions.
A daughter-in-law dismissed.
A mistress upgraded.
A family image restored.
A weak woman removed from the table before dessert.
That was how the evening was supposed to unfold.
Grace should have cried at the table, signed nothing of consequence, and left shattered enough for Victoria to comfort Ethan publicly.
Instead, Grace stood on the terrace with a phone pressed to her ear, and Victoria could feel the scene turning against them.
“She’s making calls,” Victoria said.
Ethan did not look at her.
“I can see that.”
“To whom?”
His jaw tightened.
“I said I don’t know.”
Miranda glanced between them, suddenly less triumphant.
The guests remained silent behind their wineglasses. No one wanted to leave first. The restaurant staff hovered near the walls, pretending not to watch and failing.
Victoria pushed back her chair.
The legs scraped across the polished floor.
Ethan caught her wrist before she could move toward the terrace.
“Don’t.”
Victoria stared at him.
The restraint startled her.
Ethan had never stopped his mother when she moved against Grace.
Not once.
“What are you afraid of?” she whispered.
He released her wrist.
“I’m not afraid.”
But his face said otherwise.
Victoria followed his gaze.
Grace was still outside. Her navy gown moved in the wind, the divorce papers held tightly against her chest. Her wedding ring remained on the table inside, beside the white envelope Ethan had slammed onto her plate.
A symbol of abandonment.
Or so Victoria had thought.
Now the ring looked like bait left behind.
Victoria’s lips tightened.
“She is dramatic. She always has been.”
Miranda tried to smile.
“She looked destroyed.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Looked.”
That word unsettled all three of them.
On the terrace, Grace listened as Samuel continued.
“Mrs. Whitaker instructed that I contact you immediately upon any formal separation attempt initiated by Mr. Caldwell.”
Grace’s hand went cold.
“Formal separation attempt?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
Samuel did not reveal the contents.
He only said, “Because she believed timing would matter.”
Grace looked at the anniversary candles through the glass.
Ethan had timed the cruelty.

Evelyn had timed the protection.
