Chapter 7 - Enjoy Your Dinner

Grace had said it softly.
Enjoy your dinner.
At the time, Ethan thought it was surrender wrapped in dignity.
Now the line replayed in his head as something else.
A warning.
He pushed his chair back.
Victoria grabbed his sleeve.
“Do not go after her looking desperate.”
He stared at his mother.
“Do you want me to sit here while she talks to whoever that is?”
Victoria’s eyes flicked toward the guests.
“I want you to remember you chose a public table.”
That silenced him.
Because she was right.
This humiliation had been his theater.
He had invited the audience.
He had struck the glass.
He had pulled the envelope.
He had said the sentence about being held back loud enough for strangers to hear.
Now he was trapped inside the same stage.
Miranda leaned in, whispering.
“Maybe it’s just a lawyer.”
Ethan turned to her slowly.
“Just?”
Miranda recoiled.
Victoria’s eyes sharpened.
“You said the papers were clean.”
“They are.”
“Then why are you shaking?”
Ethan looked at his hand.
The tremor was slight.
Visible only because the champagne flute caught the chandelier light.
He set it down.
Grace remained on the terrace.
Samuel’s voice lowered.
“Are you alone?”
Grace looked through the glass at Ethan, Victoria, Miranda, the guests, the untouched ring.
“No.”
“Are you safe?”
She paused.
The question did not have the answer it should have.
She was not being touched.
Not threatened directly.
Not trapped.
But safety was not only about locked doors.
Sometimes danger wore a black suit and smiled while handing you divorce papers on an anniversary.
“I’m outside,” she said.
“Stay there for now.”
Grace nodded though he could not see.
Her tears had slowed.
Hope had not arrived fully.
Only the first dangerous trace of it.
That was enough to change her face.
Ethan saw the change.
May you like
And panic entered his eyes.
