Chapter 21 - Daniel and I separate

I moved with Lucy into a rental townhouse.

I could have stayed in the marital home.

I did not want to.

Every room contained a version of the babies.

Bassinets.

Bottle rack.

Two car seats.

Double stroller.

Evelyn standing at the sink.

Daniel saying:

“You’re exhausted.”

The house felt full of sentences.

Daniel asked:

“Is this permanent?”

I said:

“Yes.”

He cried.

Then:

“Because of Mom?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

“Because when you knew something happened to Owen, you chose protecting your access to help over telling me the truth.”

“I didn’t protect her.”

“You protected the arrangement.”

He looked down.

That was exactly it.

He had not chosen Evelyn over me because he loved her more.

He chose the functioning household.

Grandma helps.

Grace sleeps.

Daniel works.

Conflict avoided.

He treated the information as dangerous because it threatened the system.

The system killed our sons.

Maybe not legally.

But morally, the connection was impossible for me to live inside.

I filed for divorce.
