Chapter 8 - Daniel knew about one dose

Daniel’s first formal statement after Lucy’s interview was incomplete.

He said he had never seen Evelyn put medication into a bottle.

Then investigators obtained a text exchange from twelve days before the deaths.

Daniel:

Mom, Grace said you put something in Owen’s bottle last night. What was it?

Evelyn:

Something harmless to settle him. You survived my parenting.

Daniel:

Do not give them medicine without asking us. Seriously.

Evelyn:

It was nothing. He slept, didn’t he?

Daniel:

No more.

I read those messages in my lawyer’s office.

My hands went cold.

He knew.

Not about the fatal night.

But he knew she had added something before.

Why did he not tell me?

Because he had lied to me.

I remembered the evening.

I woke after three hours of uninterrupted sleep.

A miracle.

I asked Daniel:

“Did they wake?”

He said:

“Mom handled Owen. Probably gas.”

The next day I noticed one bottle smelled slightly different.

I asked Evelyn.

She said:

“Different formula scoop.”

I mentioned it to Daniel.

He told me:

“You’re exhausted. Don’t start a war over one bottle.”

He had already texted her.

He already knew she said she added something.

He never told me.

That became the point where my marriage changed from cracked to broken.
