Chapter 5 - Lucy speaks

Lucy’s forensic interview happened the next morning.

I did not sit in the room.

Neither did Daniel.

A trained interviewer spoke with her while investigators observed remotely.

I spent forty minutes in a hallway trying not to vomit.

Afterward, prosecutors eventually disclosed the substance of the interview through the case process.

Lucy called the twins:

Miley and Owie.

Miles and Owen.

She said Grandma helped with “night milk.”

What happened?

“Grandma makes it sleepy.”

How?

Lucy said Evelyn sometimes took “little white medicine” from her purse.

What did she do with it?

“Made crumbs.”

How?

Lucy imitated pressing something with her hand.

Then:

“Put the snow in milk.”

Did anyone tell Lucy to call it snow?

“No.”

Did Lucy know what it was?

“Grandma medicine.”

How did she know?

“Grandma said.”

What did Grandma say?

This part took several questions because Lucy wandered into a story about her teddy bear.

Eventually:

Grandma said babies needed to “sleep like good babies.”

Had Lucy seen this once or more than once?

Lucy said:

“Lots.”

How many?

She held up four fingers.

Then five.

Then said:

“I don’t know.”

The interviewer did not convert that into a count.

Good.

Did Dad see?

Lucy said:

“Daddy saw Grandma make milk.”

That sentence would create months of chaos.

What exactly did Dad see?

Milk preparation?

Powder?

Medicine?

Nobody could assume.

Then Lucy said something else.

“Daddy said no more snow.”

My stomach dropped when I learned that.

Because if accurate, Daniel knew something.

Maybe not the fatal night.

May you like

Maybe not exactly what.

But something.
