PART 1
“She came back to her father’s mansion and found him crawling across the marble floor… while her stepmother laughed above him.”
Isabella Hartwell returned to her father’s mansion with one suitcase and six years of silence behind her.
The front door was unlocked.
That was the first warning.
Her father had once kept three guards at the gate, two cameras at the entrance, and a house manager who could hear a pin drop from the east wing.
Now the grand foyer was quiet except for the sound of broken porcelain scraping across marble.
Isabella stepped inside and froze.
Her father was on the floor.
Richard Hartwell, the man who once stood before boardrooms like a king, was crawling on his hands and knees toward a shattered teacup.
His dark suit hung loosely from his body.
One hand was bandaged.
His face was pale.
His breathing came in small, painful bursts.
Above him stood Vivian, his second wife, elegant in a champagne blouse, cream skirt, and red heels.
One red heel rested near Richard’s trembling hand.
“Move faster, Richard,” Vivian said.
“Or forget your medication.”
A younger man laughed from near the staircase.
Marcus.
Vivian’s son.
The boy who had once called Isabella “temporary family” at her father’s wedding.
Richard reached for the broken cup with shaking fingers.
Then he saw Isabella.
His face changed.
Shame first.
Then disbelief.
Then a kind of hope so fragile it hurt to look at.
“Isabella…”
His voice cracked.
“You came back.”
Vivian turned slowly.
For one second, her face went white.
Then she smiled.
“Well.”
“The runaway daughter returns.”
Isabella set her suitcase down.
Her eyes moved from Vivian’s heel to Richard’s bandaged hand.
Then to the spilled tea spreading across the marble like a stain.
Her voice was quiet.
“Take your foot off my father.”
Marcus stepped forward, smirking.
“You can’t save him.”
“He signed everything.”
Isabella looked at him.
Then at Vivian.
Then she opened her suitcase and removed a sealed folder.
Vivian’s smile faded.
Isabella walked to her father, knelt beside him, and helped him sit upright.
Richard gripped her sleeve like he was afraid she might vanish again.
Isabella stood between him and them.
“This isn’t your mansion anymore.”
May you like
“It’s a crime scene.”
