PART 3

Isabella did not return alone.

That was the part Vivian did not know yet.

A black car waited beyond the gate.

Inside sat Detective Nora Hale, a forensic accountant named Grace Monroe, and a county elder-abuse investigator.

They had not entered immediately because Isabella wanted one thing first.

She wanted to see her father with her own eyes.

She had feared he was dead.

Then she saw something worse.

Alive.

Humiliated.

Trapped inside his own mansion.

Richard tried to stand, but his knees gave out.

Isabella caught him.

He flinched when her hand touched his shoulder.

That flinch said more than any confession.

Vivian snapped, “Do not perform concern now.”

“You left him.”

Isabella looked at her.

“You blocked every call.”

Richard blinked.

Vivian laughed.

“Still blaming others.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You should leave before security removes you.”

Isabella looked around the empty foyer.

“What security?”

Marcus’s confidence flickered.

The old mansion staff was gone.

The guards were gone.

Only Vivian’s people remained.

And today, even they were not visible.

Isabella turned to Richard.

“Dad, did they give you your medication today?”

Richard’s lips trembled.

Vivian answered.

“He is confused.”

Isabella did not look at her.

“Dad.”

Richard swallowed.

“No.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“Richard.”

He shrank at her voice.

Isabella felt the last soft place in her heart turn to steel.

She helped him lean against the wall.

Then she took out her phone and made one call.

“Come in.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

The front door opened again.

Detective Hale entered first.

Then Grace Monroe.

Then two officers.

Then the elder-abuse investigator.

Marcus stepped back.

Vivian lifted her chin.

“This is private property.”

Detective Hale looked down at Richard on the marble floor.

“Not anymore.”

Grace opened her tablet.

“Emergency financial review is active.”

The investigator crouched beside Richard.

“Mr. Hartwell, my name is Daniel Price.”

“I’m here to make sure you’re safe.”

Richard began crying.

Not loudly.

Just tears falling silently down the face of a man who had been trained to ask permission to suffer.

Vivian whispered, “Richard, don’t you dare.”

Isabella turned toward her.

“He already dared.”

May you like

“He survived long enough for me to come home.”
