PART 8

Vivian was arrested two days later.

She wore sunglasses.

Inside.

At noon.

As if darkness could make her less visible.

Two officers escorted her from the mansion while cameras flashed through the front gate.

Marcus was arrested at the beach house.

He had two passports, a packed bag, and a laptop full of deleted files that were not deleted enough.

The charges came in waves.

Elder abuse.

Fraud.

Coercion.

Financial exploitation.

Medication neglect.

Evidence tampering.

Mail interference.

Vivian’s attorney called it a family dispute.

Detective Hale called it a pattern.

The court agreed with Detective Hale.

Richard was moved to a private rehabilitation facility.

Isabella visited every morning.

At first, he apologized every day.

For believing Vivian.

For letting Isabella leave.

For being weak.

One morning, Isabella finally stopped him.

“Dad.”

“You were abused.”

He looked ashamed.

“I was supposed to protect you.”

“You did.”

He frowned.

“I failed.”

Isabella took his hand.

“You called me home.”

“That was protection.”

Richard cried quietly.

Healing came slowly.

He learned to walk again with assistance.

He learned to ask for water without apologizing.

He learned that medication could be given kindly.

He learned that silence did not mean safety.

At the preliminary hearing, Vivian refused to look at Richard.

She looked only at Isabella.

Her hatred was almost impressive.

Marcus tried to blame his mother.

Vivian tried to blame Richard’s confusion.

The camera footage blamed both of them.

Then Grace testified about the money.

The fake vendors.

The stolen trust access.

The attempted mansion transfer.

The shell companies.

The room became very quiet.

Rich people hate when theft is explained simply.

After the hearing, Richard asked Isabella to take him to the mansion.

She hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

He nodded.

“I need to see it without them.”

They entered through the front door together.

The foyer was clean now.

No broken cup.

No spilled tea.

No red heels.

But Richard still stared at the marble floor.

Then he whispered, “I crawled there.”

Isabella held his arm.

May you like

“And now you’re standing.”
