PART 9

The trial lasted three weeks.

Vivian dressed like a widow at every hearing, though Richard was still alive.

That offended Isabella more than she expected.

Marcus wore remorse badly.

He cried only when the prosecutor showed bank statements.

Not the footage.

Not Richard crawling.

Not the medication logs.

The money.

That was what made him weep.

Richard testified on the ninth day.

He walked slowly to the stand with a cane.

Isabella stood with him until the bailiff helped him sit.

Vivian watched him like he had betrayed her.

Richard did not look at her.

The prosecutor asked what he remembered.

He remembered the phone being taken.

He remembered missing letters.

He remembered Vivian telling him Isabella wanted him dead.

He remembered crawling for medication.

He remembered the sound of Marcus laughing.

Then the prosecutor asked what happened when Isabella returned.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“She called it a crime scene.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“I think that was the first true thing anyone said in my house for years.”

The jury heard the voicemail next.

Come home.

Before she takes it.

Then the camera footage.

Then Grace’s audit.

Then the intercepted letters.

Then the medical report.

By closing arguments, Vivian’s story had nowhere to stand.

The verdict came before sunset.

Guilty.

Guilty.

Guilty.

Marcus lowered his head.

Vivian did not.

She stared at Isabella as if hatred were still power.

Isabella stared back without fear.

After sentencing, Richard asked for one more thing.

“Bring Caroline’s portrait home.”

The portrait of Isabella’s mother was found in a storage unit rented by Vivian.

Wrapped badly.

Frame cracked.

But the face untouched.

They hung it back in the foyer.

Not above the fireplace where guests could admire it.

At the foot of the grand staircase.

Where Richard would see it every morning.

He stood before it for a long time.

Then whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Isabella did not interrupt.
