PART 5

The camera footage began with small cruelties.

Vivian removing Richard’s cane from beside his chair.

Marcus laughing when Richard asked for help standing.

A staff member carrying away unopened mail addressed to Richard.

Vivian feeding him pills without showing the bottle.

Then the clips became worse.

Richard reaching for a phone.

Marcus taking it.

Richard trying to enter his study.

Vivian blocking the door.

Richard spilling tea.

Vivian making him clean it with shaking hands.

The foyer footage from that afternoon was the final clip.

Richard dropping the tray.

The teacup breaking.

Vivian stepping over him.

Marcus laughing.

Move faster, Richard, or forget your medication.

Detective Hale watched it once.

Then turned to the officers.

“Separate them.”

Vivian snapped, “You are not arresting anyone.”

Detective Hale looked at her.

“Not yet.”

“That depends on how badly you keep lying.”

Marcus tried to leave through the side hall.

An officer stopped him.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

Richard sat wrapped in a blanket from the ambulance crew.

He looked smaller than Isabella remembered.

Her father had once filled every room.

Now he looked surprised that people were listening when he spoke.

Isabella knelt in front of him.

“I’m sorry I stayed away.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“I let her make me believe you hated me.”

Isabella’s eyes filled.

“I wrote you every month.”

Vivian laughed sharply.

Richard looked at her.

“What?”

Grace opened another file.

“We recovered mail forwarding records.”

“Letters from Isabella were diverted to a private office controlled by Mrs. Hartwell.”

Richard closed his eyes.

The grief on his face was unbearable.

“She said you never wrote.”

Isabella took his bandaged hand.

“I never stopped.”

Vivian’s expression shifted.

For the first time, she looked less arrogant than exposed.

Marcus, however, was still foolish enough to speak.

“So what?”

“You think letters matter?”

Grace looked at him.

“In isolation cases, yes.”

Detective Hale added, “In criminal elder-abuse cases, very much.”

Marcus went pale.

Richard looked at Isabella through tears.

“I thought I lost you.”

Isabella held his hand tighter.

“You didn’t lose me.”

May you like

“They hid me.”
