Chapter 1 - THE LOOK ON ETHAN’S FACE Maya sat trembling on the examination bed, one hand pressed protectively over the emptiness beneath her hospital gown.

Her cheek was bruised. A dark mark crossed her collarbone. Her left wrist had already begun swelling beneath the plastic identification band.
Ethan stepped toward her.
“Let me help you.”
The moment his hand approached her shoulder, Maya recoiled so violently that the heart monitor accelerated. She clutched Nora’s arm and dragged her mother between them.
“Mom… don’t make me go back with him.”
Nora moved without hesitation.
She planted herself in front of the bed, blocking Ethan’s view of Maya while Nurse Tessa Reed quietly stepped closer to the emergency button.
Dr. Elise Lawson entered carrying the medical chart. Grief tightened her face before she spoke.
“I’m so sorry. The baby didn’t survive.”
Maya folded forward with a broken sob.
Nora caught her before she slipped from the bed. Behind them, Ethan lowered his head.
But not quickly enough.
For less than a second, relief crossed his face.
Nora saw it.
So did the security camera above the mobile equipment cabinet.
Lorraine stood beside her son, gripping her expensive handbag against her ribs. She made no attempt to comfort Maya.
Instead, she said, “Take her home and teach her not to destroy good families.”
Nora slowly turned toward her.
The room became still.
Nora removed her phone and activated the camera.
“Tuesday, 9:18 p.m.,” she said calmly. “Maya arrived with bruising to the face, neck, wrist, ribs, and abdomen. Ethan claims she fell down the stairs. Lorraine has just blamed Maya for losing the baby.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Put that phone away.”
Nora ignored him.
She recorded the monitor, Maya’s injuries, Ethan’s untouched coffee, Lorraine’s handbag, the examination-room number, and the hospital clock.
Then she faced Nurse Tessa.
“Please preserve every photograph, entrance record, security video, and version of the medical chart.”
Tessa nodded.
“I already locked the original chart.”
Ethan forced a gentle smile and extended his hand toward Maya.
“Come home, sweetheart. We can fix this.”
Maya pulled the loose wedding ring from her finger. Her hand shook as she hid it inside Nora’s coat pocket.
Nora struck Ethan’s hand away.
“Touch my daughter again, and every lie your family told becomes evidence.”
For the first time, Ethan looked toward the ceiling camera.
Lorraine tightened her grip on her handbag.
A folded document slipped through its partly open zipper.
Nora saw Maya’s forged signature above the words:
