Chapter 5 - ETHAN’S COFFEE CUP Ethan demanded a lawyer and stopped answering questions.
He kept holding the cardboard coffee cup he had brought into the hospital. When an officer asked him to place it on the counter, he refused.
“It’s coffee.”
“Then you won’t mind leaving it.”
Ethan crushed the cup in his hand.
Liquid spilled across the floor.
Nurse Tessa noticed a clear residue beneath the lid. She collected the cup before housekeeping could remove it.
Laboratory testing found traces of the same sedative in Maya’s blood.
Not enough to prove Ethan drugged her.
Enough to prove the substance had recently touched something he carried.
Ethan claimed Lorraine used his cup to store her pills.
Lorraine claimed she had never touched it.
Their stories were beginning to separate.
Hospital security footage added another contradiction.
Ethan arrived at 8:58 p.m., twenty-seven minutes after the ambulance carrying Maya.
He did not immediately enter the examination corridor.
He spent eleven minutes inside the public restroom.
When he emerged, he had changed shirts and washed his hands.
He carried the coffee cup before visiting the cafeteria.
The cup had come from home.
A search warrant was issued for the Kessler residence.
Police found blood beside the kitchen island, broken glass in the trash, and a section of carpet cut from the foyer near the stairs.
Someone had attempted to clean the floor with bleach.
In the garage stood two packed suitcases.
One belonged to Ethan.
The other belonged to Lorraine.
Victor Hale’s car had entered the neighborhood at 6:52 p.m. and left at 8:36—five minutes after the emergency call.
He denied entering the house.
A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured him carrying a leather case toward the side entrance.
The same case appeared in Ethan’s kitchen in one photograph Maya had taken of the forged loan documents.
Victor’s office issued a statement claiming he had visited only to discuss legitimate business.
Nora studied the attorney’s signature on the guardianship petition.
He had notarized it.
Before the assault.
Before the miscarriage.
Before Ethan’s staircase story.
Victor had prepared a legal explanation for Maya’s resistance and waited inside the house to see whether it would work.
Dr. Lawson then delivered the toxicology update.
The sedative was not the only drug in Maya’s blood.
A second medication had accelerated uterine contractions.
It had been administered several hours before Ethan shoved her.
The fall had caused devastating trauma.
