Chapter 6 - THE VITAMIN BOTTLE Maya had taken only three things that morning.
A prenatal vitamin.
A nausea tablet prescribed by Dr. Lawson.
And tea prepared by Lorraine during an unexpected visit.
Lorraine claimed the tea contained nothing but ginger and honey.
The used cup had already been washed.
Police found the prenatal bottle inside Maya’s bathroom cabinet. The label was correct, but several capsules contained white powder instead of vitamins.
The powder matched the contraction-inducing medication in Maya’s blood.
Maya covered her mouth.
“I took one every morning.”
Dr. Lawson examined previous bloodwork. Maya had shown unexplained signs of uterine irritation for nearly three weeks, but each episode subsided before becoming an emergency.
Someone had been dosing her gradually.
The bottle had been purchased two months earlier.
Ethan picked it up from the pharmacy.
He claimed it remained sealed until Maya opened it.
The pharmacy’s inventory footage showed the bottle leaving in a standard tamper-resistant package.
Someone altered it afterward.
Nora remembered Lorraine bringing groceries into Maya’s house during the second trimester. She often reorganized cabinets and criticized Maya for storing supplements near the shower.
Lorraine denied touching the bottle.
Ethan blamed her immediately.
“My mother was obsessed with the trust.”
Lorraine’s attorney responded by releasing a statement accusing Ethan of violence, fraud, and manipulating his mother.
Their alliance began collapsing publicly.
Detective Lena interviewed Maya again.
“Did Ethan ever ask what would happen to the shares if the baby did not survive?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That I retained them until another child was born.”
Lena paused.
The miscarriage would delay the audit, but it would not automatically give Ethan control.
The guardianship was essential.
If Maya were declared mentally incompetent after the pregnancy loss, Ethan could manage her shares through the forged power of attorney.
The drugs created the medical crisis.
The assault created fear and confusion.
The hospital papers created legal control.
Every part supported the others.
Nora examined the loose wedding ring Maya had removed. Dark residue remained inside the band.
Maya remembered clawing Ethan’s face while he dragged her toward the foyer.
Forensic testing recovered his blood and skin beneath the ring.
Ethan had washed and changed his clothes, but the ring preserved physical evidence that Maya fought him.
The jeweler’s records revealed another discovery.
Lorraine had ordered an identical replacement ring two weeks earlier, one size smaller.
She requested that it be engraved with Maya and Ethan’s wedding date.
The duplicate was found inside Lorraine’s handbag.
“Why make another ring?” Nora asked.
