Chapter 4 - THE FIFTY MISSING MINUTES Maya’s phone contained no recording of the assault.
At first.
A forensic technician found that the voice-assistant application had activated when the phone struck the floor. It captured forty-three minutes of audio before Lorraine placed it inside her handbag.
The recording began with shattering glass.
Maya’s voice sounded distant and frightened.
“You used my shares.”
Ethan answered, “You weren’t supposed to review those files.”
“My father left that company to me.”
“Your father left a financial disaster that my family saved.”
“You borrowed against it.”
Lorraine entered the conversation.
“Sign the restructuring agreement and stop pretending you understand business.”
Maya refused.
A chair scraped.
Ethan’s voice moved closer.
“If the baby is born, the audit freezes everything.”
“Then maybe everything should be frozen.”
A violent impact followed.
Nora closed her eyes.
On the recording, Maya cried out. Ethan told her to stand. She said she could not feel one leg.
Lorraine asked, “Is she bleeding?”
Ethan answered, “Not enough.”
Detective Lena stopped the playback for several seconds.
Even hospital security officers looked shaken.
The recording continued.
Maya begged them to call an ambulance.
Lorraine told Ethan to wait.
“If the pregnancy ends here, the hospital will ask too many questions. Put her near the stairs.”
Another impact.
Then silence.
When Maya regained consciousness, Ethan began rehearsing the story.
“You drank wine. You became emotional. You slipped.”
Lorraine added, “And if she contradicts us, the psychiatric report explains it.”
The final minutes captured Ethan searching for Maya’s phone while Lorraine collected glass from the kitchen.
Then another voice entered the room.
Male.
Calm.
“Do not move her again. The visible injuries are already difficult to explain.”
Maya stared at the speaker.
“Who is that?”
Ethan and Lorraine refused to answer.
The unknown man said, “Use the hospital guardianship. Once she is medicated, obtain the transfer signature.”
Detective Lena isolated the voice for comparison.
It did not belong to Ethan.
It did not belong to any relative present at the hospital.
But Nora recognized the measured cadence.
Victor Hale, the attorney who had administered Maya’s father’s estate.
