Chapter 2 - THE STAIRCASE STORY Dr. Lawson ordered Ethan and Lorraine removed from the examination area.
Ethan refused until hospital security arrived. Even then, he insisted Maya needed him nearby because she was “confused, emotional, and medically unstable.”
Maya flinched each time his voice crossed the privacy curtain.
Nora remained beside the bed.
“You don’t have to explain everything tonight,” she whispered. “But you are not leaving with him.”
Maya squeezed her hand.
“He said nobody would believe me.”
“I believe you.”
Dr. Lawson returned after reviewing the imaging.
“The injuries do not fit a simple fall.”
Maya had bruises on both upper arms in the shape of fingers. Her wrist showed signs of being twisted. The mark across her ribs suggested a blunt impact from the side rather than tumbling down steps.
Most troubling was the abdominal trauma.
“The pregnancy loss appears connected to the injuries,” the doctor said carefully. “But toxicology also found something unexpected.”
“What?” Nora asked.
“A sedating medication that was never prescribed to Maya.”
Maya shook her head.
“I didn’t take anything.”
Ethan had told paramedics that Maya became dizzy after drinking wine, lost her balance, and fell down twelve stairs.
Her blood contained no alcohol.
Nurse Tessa brought in the ambulance report.
Ethan claimed the fall happened at 7:40 p.m.
The hospital received the emergency call at 8:31.
Nearly fifty minutes were missing.
“What happened during that time?” Nora asked.
Maya stared at the blanket.
“I woke up on the foyer floor.”
“You were unconscious?”
“I think so.”
“Where was Ethan?”
“Standing over me.”
Her voice fractured.
“Lorraine was there too.”
Nora’s phone continued recording from the bedside table.
Maya remembered Ethan telling his mother to collect the broken glass. Lorraine asked whether Maya could still sign documents. Ethan said they would handle it at the hospital after she received pain medication.
“They were waiting for me to lose the baby,” Maya whispered.
Outside, Lorraine demanded access to her daughter-in-law’s chart. She produced the emergency guardianship form and claimed Maya had suffered a psychiatric crisis.
Nurse Tessa examined the document.
The physician’s signature belonged to Dr. Lawson.
Dr. Lawson had never signed it.
The document was dated two days before Maya’s injuries.
Nora looked through the glass toward Ethan.
“This was prepared before she supposedly fell.”
Hospital security called the police.
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
Then Tessa checked the chart history and found that someone had entered Maya’s medical file earlier that afternoon using Dr. Lawson’s credentials.
The intruder added a false note describing Maya as paranoid, suicidal, and dangerous to her unborn child.
