Chapter 15 - THE SECURITY DOORS Candace appeared through an encrypted video connection.

She looked exhausted, with bruising along one side of her face. Federal officers stood behind her.
Maya watched from the rehabilitation house with Nora and Detective Lena beside her.
“Who is Samuel’s son?” Maya asked.
Candace glanced toward someone outside the frame.
“His name is Adrian Kessler.”
“Why was his record placed under mine?”
“To keep Victor from finding him after Samuel died.”
“You helped Victor target me.”
“I helped him for years.”
“Why should we believe you now?”
“Because Northbridge no longer answers to Victor.”
Candace claimed Adrian had spent decades under a protected identity. Samuel created Northbridge partly to preserve assets for both children, but Victor erased Adrian from succession records and concentrated everything around Maya.
Years later, an unknown director restored Adrian’s claim.
“Did Adrian order the drugs?” Nora asked.
“No.”
“Did he know Maya was being targeted?”
Candace hesitated.
“That is what I was trying to learn.”
She held up the hospital chart.
Inside was a genetic report proving Adrian and Maya shared a father.
The next page contained a current photograph.
The man looked enough like Samuel to make Nora grip the table.
He also wore an administrative badge from Maya’s hospital.
Adrian had been inside the building the night Maya arrived.
The photograph’s background showed the same mobile equipment cabinet where the burner phone was hidden.
Maya leaned closer.
“Was he helping them?”
Candace shook her head.
“He said he entered to stop the guardianship.”
“Then why didn’t he come forward?”
“Because the person directing Northbridge threatened his daughter.”
Detective Lena asked where Adrian was now.
Candace looked frightened.
“He was supposed to meet me before I surrendered.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
The video connection flickered.
A message appeared across Nora’s phone:
Completed evidence timeline received.
Nora had never sent it.
Her recording application began uploading every file by itself—Maya’s statements, the doctor’s words, Ethan’s expression, Lorraine’s handbag, the security footage, the loan records, and Candace’s live confession.
Destination:
NORTHBRIDGE INTERNAL REVIEW.
Detective Lena disconnected the house network.
The upload continued through an unknown signal.
Then the rehabilitation facility’s security doors unlocked simultaneously.
The corridor camera showed a hospital equipment cabinet rolling toward Maya’s room.
No one appeared to be pushing it.
Nora stepped in front of Maya as Lena drew her weapon.
The cabinet stopped outside the door.
A phone began ringing inside its lowest drawer.
On the screen was a live hospital feed.
Adrian Kessler sat bound to Maya’s former examination bed.
Behind him stood a person holding Lorraine’s handbag.
The figure remained outside the camera frame.
A distorted voice spoke through the phone.
“You documented the first family, Nora.”
The door handle slowly turned.
“Now record what happens to the second.”
