Chapter 9 - LORRAINE’S PARTIAL TRUTH Lorraine requested a private interview with prosecutors.

She blamed Ethan.

“He lost control.”

Detective Lena placed the audio recording on the table.

“You asked whether Maya was bleeding enough.”

Lorraine’s mouth tightened.

“I was frightened.”

“You delayed the ambulance.”

“I believed Victor’s medical adviser was coming.”

“Who?”

“I never met him.”

She claimed Victor instructed the family to create a controlled medical event that would delay the pregnancy audit and establish Ethan as temporary decision-maker.

Lorraine believed the altered prenatal capsules would cause contractions requiring hospitalization, not pregnancy loss.

“When Maya discovered the loans, everything changed,” she said.

“Ethan shoved her.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped move her toward the stairs.”

Lorraine closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The admission came quietly.

It carried no courage.

Only surrender after evidence removed every other story.

“Why replace the wedding ring?” Lena asked.

“Victor told me the original might contain Ethan’s blood.”

“You prepared a cleaner version before the assault.”

“Ethan had scratched himself during another argument. Victor said Maya could later claim it came from him.”

Nora watched from the observation room, sickened by the casual preparation.

Lorraine finally identified the person who supplied the altered prenatal capsules.

A private nurse named Candace Moore.

Candace had worked for Victor’s firm as a medical consultant. She advised families on incapacity cases and understood which drugs could imitate natural complications.

Police searched her home.

It was empty.

Her car had been abandoned at the airport.

A security image showed her boarding no flight.

Instead, she entered Victor’s law office during the false fire alarm disguised as a courier.

Candace had removed the records boxes.

She also had hospital credentials and could have planted the burner phone.

Victor’s broader operation finally had a medical participant.

Lorraine claimed she did not know Candace planned to continue dosing Maya for weeks.

“Victor told us one capsule would be enough.”

Nora entered the room.

“Enough for what?”

Lorraine looked at her.

“To frighten Maya into signing.”

“You kept giving her the bottle.”

“I never touched it after the first replacement.”

“Then who did?”

Lorraine hesitated.

“Ethan.”

From the adjoining interview room, Ethan began shouting when officers confronted him.

He accused Lorraine of lying to save herself.

But his pharmacy records showed he ordered two replacement bottles after Maya complained the capsules smelled strange.

Each time, he threw away the original bottle before collecting another one altered by Candace.

Ethan had not merely known.

He maintained the dosing schedule.

👉 Lorraine finally admitted the plan—but the evidence showed Ethan had personally ensured Maya continued taking the dangerous capsules.
