Chapter 1

Father Returns From a Business Trip and Finds His Feverish Newborn in His Arms While His Bruised Wife Reveals the Truth.
Michael Carter had been home for less than thirty seconds when his six-week-old son went limp against his chest.
The white modern kitchen was too bright, too clean, too silent for the panic rising in his throat.
Noah’s pale-blue blanket was tucked around him, but his cheeks were flushed and his breathing came weak and uneven.
Michael pressed his cheek to the baby’s forehead.
Heat.
Too much heat.
“He’s burning up. Call 911!”
Across the marble island, Diane Carter stood with her arms folded.
“She exaggerates everything.”
Michael turned slowly toward his mother.
Behind him, Elena lowered her hands from her face.
That was when he saw it.
The bruise across her cheek.
The faint marks on her arms.
The shattered pieces of her phone near the refrigerator.
Elena gripped the counter like her body might give out.
“She took my keys… Chloe broke my phone.”
At that exact moment, Chloe appeared in the hallway holding a glass of wine.
She froze.
Michael stepped between them and Elena while keeping Noah secured against his chest.
His voice dropped.
“Who hit you?”
Elena’s eyes flicked toward Diane.
Chloe set down her wineglass and shifted toward the hallway.
Michael saw it.
Then he pulled out his phone and opened the home-security app.
A small recording indicator glowed beside the camera thumbnails.
Diane stepped back.
Chloe went pale.
Michael looked at both women.
“Every camera in this house was recording.”
