Chapter 7

Emergency sirens sounded in the distance.

Faint at first.

Then closer.

Elena heard them and began to cry harder.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

The kind of crying that happens when someone finally believes help is real.

Michael looked at her.

“You did the right thing trying to leave.”

She covered her mouth.

“I couldn’t.”

“I know.”

That was all she needed.

I know.

Not why didn’t you fight harder.

Not why didn’t you call sooner.

Not are you sure.

I know.

Diane tried to recover.

“Michael, your wife is postpartum. She’s confused.”

Michael turned toward her.

“No.”

“She’s unstable.”

“No.”

“She has been accusing us for weeks.”

“Good,” he said. “Then there should be a record.”

Diane’s face went pale.

Chloe stepped backward again.

Michael raised his phone slightly.

“Do not leave before help arrives.”

“You can’t keep me here,” Chloe snapped.

“I can keep the door camera recording you walking out while my newborn is in distress and my wife is injured.”

Chloe stopped.

Outside, red and blue light began reflecting across the white walls.

No paramedics entered yet.

No one was arrested.

No diagnosis was announced.
