Chapter 6

The home-security system had been Michael’s idea.

Elena once called it excessive.

He called it peace of mind.

He was a corporate founder. He traveled. People knew where he lived. His family had money, and newborns changed threat levels.

So he installed cameras around entrances, hallways, the kitchen, and common areas.

Not bedrooms.

Not private spaces.

Just the places where movement mattered.

Diane complained about them from the start.

“This house feels like a bank.”

Chloe said, “Normal families don’t spy on each other.”

Michael almost disabled the kitchen camera to keep the peace.

Elena asked him not to.

Quietly.

One night, while folding tiny onesies, she said, “Leave them. Just in case.”

He heard the fear then but did not understand it fully.

Now he did.

In the kitchen, with Noah feverish in his arms and Elena bruised behind him, Michael opened the app.

Small camera thumbnails appeared.

No readable text.

No full footage played.

But enough.

A thumbnail from the afternoon showed Diane standing near the counter with Elena’s keys in her hand.

Another showed Chloe holding Elena’s phone moments before the screen went dark.

Another showed Elena near the door, blocked.

Michael’s jaw tightened.

Diane saw the screen.

Her face changed.

Chloe whispered, “Michael…”

He looked up slowly.
