Chapter 9

The front door opened somewhere down the hall.
Not into the kitchen yet.
Just the sound of arrival.
Voices.
Urgent but controlled.
Michael kept his eyes on Noah.
He did not turn his back on Diane or Chloe.
Elena whispered, “Michael.”
“I’m here.”
“They’ll say I’m lying.”
He looked at her then.
“No.”
“They always do.”
“Not this time.”
Diane’s expression hardened.
“You are choosing her over your own mother.”
Michael’s face went still.
“No. I’m choosing my wife and son over the people who stopped them from getting help.”
Chloe flinched.
Diane looked wounded, but Michael no longer trusted that expression.
He had grown up obeying that look.
Apologizing to it.
Softening himself around it.
Not now.
His son was burning against his chest.
His wife had a bruise across her cheek.
His mother still wanted loyalty.
Michael glanced once at the recording thumbnails.
Then back at Diane.
“You taught me family protects its own.”
Diane lifted her chin.
He finished quietly.
“So explain why you didn’t.”
No answer came.
