Chapter 3

Elena had tried to call him.

That was the first thing she wanted him to know.

Not because she needed to defend herself.

Because she needed him to understand she had fought for Noah.

The fever started in the afternoon.

At first, Noah only seemed fussy.

Then he refused part of his bottle.

Then his body grew too warm against Elena’s skin.

She reached for her keys.

Diane stood in the doorway.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“The pediatric urgent care.”

“For a little warmth? Don’t be dramatic.”

Elena tried to move past her.

Diane took the keys from the counter.

Chloe came in laughing, already dressed for some lunch that had turned into wine.

“She’s going to embarrass Michael,” Chloe said.

Elena reached for her phone.

Chloe snatched it first.

“Call him and cry, and he’ll blame us for nothing.”

Elena lunged for it.

The phone hit the tile.

Glass cracked across the screen.

Noah started crying harder.

Elena begged.

Diane said Michael worked too hard to be disturbed.

Chloe said a good mother did not panic every time a baby got warm.

Elena tried the door.

Locked.

Tried the side entrance.

Deadbolt engaged.

Then Diane stepped close enough for Elena to smell her perfume.

“Do not make this family look unstable.”
