Chapter 2

Michael had been in Chicago for three days.
Three days of meetings.
Three days of investor calls.
Three days of checking his phone between presentations because something about Elena’s messages felt wrong.
She kept saying the same thing.
We’re fine.
Noah is fine.
Don’t worry.
But Elena did not write like that.
Not before.
Before Noah was born, she sent too many photos.
His tiny socks.
His yawns.
His fingers wrapped around hers.
The bottle warmer making a weird noise.
The way Noah hated one blue pacifier but loved another identical blue pacifier.
After Michael left, her messages became short.
Careful.
Delayed.
When he called, Diane answered once.
“Elena’s resting.”
When he asked to speak to her, Diane said, “Michael, she’s emotional. New mothers spiral.”
That word stayed with him.
Spiral.
It sounded rehearsed.
So he cut the trip short.
No announcement.
No call ahead.
Just an earlier flight, a rideshare from the airport, and his key turning quietly in the front door.
He expected relief.
Maybe exhaustion.
Maybe a messy kitchen and a crying baby.
He did not expect his wife standing pale and bruised beside the island.
He did not expect his mother looking annoyed instead of worried.
He did not expect Noah’s skin to burn through the blanket.
May you like
And he did not expect his sister Chloe to walk in from the hallway holding wine like the house had been a party while his family was falling apart.
