Chapter 5

Michael did not shout again after the first command.
That frightened Diane more.
She knew how to handle anger.
She raised Daniel and Chloe on arguments polished into guilt.
She knew how to say, “Don’t speak to your mother that way.”
She knew how to make sons feel cruel for questioning her.
But Michael’s voice went quiet.
Professional.
Precise.
He held Noah with one arm, supporting the baby’s head and back. With his other hand, he helped Elena sit on a stool without taking his eyes off Diane and Chloe.
“Tell me what happened.”
Diane answered first.
“She panicked.”
Michael ignored her.
“Elena.”
Elena’s lips trembled.
“She took my keys.”
Diane’s face tightened.
“Elena, don’t exaggerate.”
“Chloe broke my phone.”
Chloe lifted her chin.
“It slipped.”
Michael looked at the shattered pieces near the refrigerator.
Then at Chloe’s wineglass.
Then at Elena’s bruised cheek.
“Who hit you?”
No one spoke.
Elena looked toward Diane for half a second.
That was enough.
Diane’s arms loosened.
Chloe shifted toward the hallway.
Michael stepped sideways, blocking the path without touching her.
“Stay where you are.”
Chloe froze.
The baby whimpered against Michael’s chest.
That sound pulled his attention back to the only priority that mattered.
