Chapter 8

Noah’s breathing stayed uneven.

Michael adjusted the blanket carefully, keeping the baby upright against his chest the way the pediatric nurse had taught them.

His own hands wanted to shake.

He did not allow it.

Not yet.

Elena watched him with terrified eyes.

“Is he going to be okay?”

Michael did not lie.

“We’re getting him help now.”

That was the most honest sentence he could offer.

No final diagnosis.

No false reassurance.

Just action.

Diane muttered, “This is ridiculous.”

Michael looked at her once.

Not angry now.

Worse.

Done.

“You looked at him and refused to call.”

Diane said nothing.

“You looked at Elena’s face and still called her dramatic.”

Silence.

“You took her keys.”

Diane’s lips pressed together.

Chloe said, “Mom was trying to stop a scene.”

Michael looked at his sister.

“The scene is what you did when you thought I wasn’t watching.”

Chloe’s eyes flicked to the cameras.

The kitchen felt colder despite the bright lighting.

Elena sat behind Michael, one hand on the island, trying to stay upright.

The shattered phone pieces remained near the refrigerator.

Michael photographed them.

Then photographed the keys on the counter where Diane had placed them after he entered.
