Chapter 23 - THE FIRST LETTERLinda wrote Evan a letter ten months after Christmas.

His therapist read it first.
Then I did.
It began:
Evan, I took your inhaler when you were having trouble breathing. I told myself I could tell the difference between asthma and anxiety better than you could. That was wrong.
Good.
Then:
I slapped you because I was angry that you did not obey me. There is no medical explanation for that.
Better.
Then:
When your mother was hurt years ago, a judge temporarily trusted me to make decisions for you. I became too attached to that authority. The court gave it back to your mother, but I continued behaving as if I had a right to supervise both of you. I did not.
I cried.
May you like
Not because the letter repaired anything.
