Chapter 7 - THE PULMONOLOGY CLINICThe answer led to Blue Ridge Children’s Pulmonary Center.

I had never taken Evan there.
Linda had.
Three weeks before Christmas.
Without telling me.
My first reaction was disbelief.
“My mother cannot consent to that.”
Apparently she had.
The clinic’s intake record listed:
Primary guardian: Linda Marshall
Secondary contact: Allison Miller — mother
I stared at the screen so long the clinic administrator stopped talking.
“Why am I secondary?”
“We’re reviewing that.”
“What did she give you?”
“A certified guardianship order.”
“How many pages?”
Silence.
Then:
“One page appears in the scanned file.”
My stomach turned.
The clinic had accepted page one.
Nobody requested page two.
Nobody checked the court docket.
Nobody called me.
Linda signed the forms using her own signature.
She did not forge mine.
She wrote:
Relationship: grandmother/legal guardian.
That distinction would matter later.

Fraud did not always require copying someone’s name.
Sometimes it required telling the truth about the old past while omitting the part where it ended.
