Chapter 5 - THE PART I HID FROM PEOPLEThe car accident was not the entire reason the guardianship lasted seventy-eight days.

Pain medication became a problem.

Not street drugs.

Not some dramatic descent.

Prescription oxycodone after multiple surgeries.

I began taking doses earlier than scheduled.

Then requesting refills too soon.

Then telling myself pain justified it.

A rehabilitation physician noticed.

So did Linda.

I hated her for noticing.

My medical team shifted treatment and recommended a short residential program specializing in pain management and medication dependence.

I went voluntarily.

Twenty-eight days.

I had never been arrested.

Never driven impaired with Evan.

Never endangered him.

But I was dependent.

The word mattered.

I completed treatment.

Continued outpatient therapy.

By the time I returned home, the judge reviewed my medical release, treatment plan, housing, employment, and support.

The temporary guardianship was terminated twelve days before its original expiration date.

Full parental authority returned to me.

Linda hugged me outside the courthouse.

“I’m proud of you.”

I cried.

She said:

May you like

“You never have to be ashamed with me.”

For the next two years, I believed she meant it.
