That was the first bad news.
It was a certified copy of the old temporary guardianship order.
Page one.
Only page one.
The heading identified the county juvenile and domestic relations court.
Case number.
My name.
Evan’s name.
Linda’s name.
Then the language:
Linda Marshall is hereby appointed temporary legal guardian of the minor child Evan Miller with authority to consent to routine and emergency medical care...
George had seen that sentence.
So had the medic.
What page one did not display prominently was the termination date.
That appeared on page two.
Page two was not in Linda’s leather portfolio.
The police searched no house without authority.
But Linda’s attorney voluntarily produced the rest of the portfolio two days later.
There were six copies of page one.
No page two.
There was also a photocopy of the separate order terminating guardianship.
That order existed in another folder.
Linda possessed it.
She knew the authority had ended.

Why carry multiple certified-looking copies of only the page that made her appear to have current authority?
