Nelson answered:
“Then you told Peyton to shut up.”
“I told her not to dramatize.”
“She was right.”
“She got hurt later. That doesn’t make every complaint before it prophetic.”

Then:
“When I was thirteen, you did this to me too.”
Walter stopped.
I looked at my husband.

“When Grant used to pin me down, you told me to fight back.”
“You were brothers.”
“When he broke my nose, you told Mom I tripped.”
Elaine began crying.
Walter’s face hardened.
“That was forty years ago.”
“Yes.”
Nelson stood.
“That’s the problem.”
He left.
