Just silence.
Nelson had learned as a child that confronting Walter made things worse.
So he became excellent at waiting for tension to pass.
I had learned as an ICU nurse that delayed action can kill.
We were perfectly designed to trigger each other.
Couples therapy was brutal.
I said:
“You stood there.”
He said:
“I know.”
“I looked at you and you stood there.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because for thirty-eight years when Dad got loud, I waited.”
I cried.
“That cannot happen with Peyton.”
“It won’t.”
“You can’t promise instinct disappears.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“I can promise I’m working on a different response.”
That was more believable.
We stayed married.
