Chapter 9 - MY OWN FAILUREPeyton had mentioned Bryce before Christmas.

Three weeks earlier.
We were folding laundry.
She said:
“Bryce gets mean when Grandpa is around.”
I asked:
“What does that mean?”
“He acts tough.”
I said:
“All thirteen-year-olds act weird around older boys and men.”
She frowned.
“He’s not like that at Aunt Ashley’s.”
I should have asked more.
Instead my phone rang.
Work.
I answered.
Conversation gone.
Two days before the cabin trip, Peyton asked:
“Do I have to play outside with Bryce?”
I said:
“You don’t have to play with anyone.”
She said:
“Grandpa says cousins stick together.”
I replied:
“Then tell Grandpa I said you can choose.”
I thought I had solved it.
I had not asked why she wanted distance.
That mistake belonged to me.

Not equivalent to anyone harming her.
Still mine.
