Bryce had been suspended.
The injured boy’s parents knew.
School knew.
There had been disciplinary meetings.
The secrecy was inside the family.
Walter convinced Grant and Ashley not to tell the extended family.
Why?
“Bryce didn’t need a label.”
That was Walter’s phrase.
According to Grant:
“He said if everyone started treating Bryce like a dangerous kid, Bryce would become one.”
Part of that belief was not absurd.
Children should not be frozen into their worst behavior.
But Walter turned compassion into concealment.
Bryce attended six counseling sessions.
Then stopped.
Grant said the therapist wanted longer treatment.
Walter called therapy “making him feel defective.”
Ashley agreed.
Grant did not fight hard enough.
