PART 2

Elena had installed the hidden camera four days earlier.

Not because she wanted to trap her husband.

Because she wanted to survive being called crazy.

Dominic had spent three years making her doubt her own memory.

If he slammed a door, he said she startled easily.

If he crushed a glass in his hand, he said she exaggerated.

If he grabbed her wrist hard enough to leave marks, he said she bruised like a child.

If she cried, Victoria said, “Marriage is not for fragile women.”

Arthur said nothing.

That silence became part of the furniture.

The camera was small.

No larger than a matchbox.

It sat inside a fake charger near the kitchen island, angled toward the stove, dining table, and living room.

Elena bought it after Dominic threw her phone into the sink and told his parents she had dropped it during a panic attack.

The camera did not just record.

It uploaded automatically to a secure cloud account her sister had created.

If Elena pressed a hidden button on her necklace, the footage would be sent to three people.

Her sister.

Her attorney.

And a police contact assigned after her last quiet visit to the precinct.

Dominic did not know about the visit.

Victoria did not know.

Arthur did not know.

They still believed Elena was trapped inside the version of her they had built.

An ungrateful wife.

An anxious woman.

A woman lucky to marry into the Hale family.

That night, dinner was supposed to be peaceful.

Victoria had planned it.

She said the family needed to “reset.”

She said Dominic had been under pressure.

She said Elena should make his favorite meal and stop provoking conflict.

Elena cooked because refusing would become another fight.

Roast chicken.

Green beans.

Mashed potatoes.

Red wine.

She burned the sauce by accident when Dominic came into the kitchen and whispered, “Smile tonight.”

Her hand shook.

The sauce scorched.

Dominic saw it.

His face went still.

Then he picked up the hot pan.

Elena stepped back.

“Dominic, please.”

He smiled.

The camera watched.
