PART 9

The case took eight months.

Dominic fought every step.

Men like him often do.

They do not only want freedom.

They want the last version of the story.

He claimed Elena staged the footage.

Forensic analysis proved she did not.

He claimed the burn was accidental.

The angle, timing, and his own words proved otherwise.

He claimed she was unstable.

Her doctor, sister, journal, and years of documented messages proved she had been surviving coercion.

He claimed his mother was only trying to protect the family.

Victoria’s recording proved she was protecting him from accountability.

Arthur testified on a rainy Tuesday.

He walked into court without Victoria.

That alone became a statement.

He described the balcony.

The broken phone.

The bruises.

The dinner.

The pan.

His own silence.

Dominic stared at him with hatred.

Arthur did not look away.

When the prosecutor asked why he had not spoken sooner, Arthur said, “Because cowardice is easier when the house is comfortable.”

The courtroom went silent.

Elena cried then.

Not for Arthur.

For the truth finally sounding like truth.

Victoria left during his testimony.

She did not return.

The verdict came two days later.

Guilty.

Assault.

Domestic violence.

Witness intimidation.

Additional charges tied to coercive control and evidence tampering were upheld through plea negotiations after the conviction.

Dominic shouted once when the verdict was read.

The judge ordered him quiet.

For once, he obeyed.

Elena stood outside the courthouse afterward with Mara beside her.

Reporters called her brave.

She disliked that word at first.

Brave sounded too clean.

Too shiny.

It did not smell like smoke or fear or hospital antiseptic.

Then Mara said, “Take it.”

Elena looked at her.

“What?”

“The word.”

“You earned whatever word helps.”

So Elena took it.

Not because she had never been afraid.

Because she had been afraid and pressed the button anyway.

That night, she returned to the house with officers present to collect her things.

The kitchen island looked ordinary.

The fake charger camera still sat near the outlet.

Elena picked it up and held it in her palm.

Small.

Plastic.

Unimpressive.

It had done what no one in that house had done.

It told the truth.
