PART 8

Dominic’s attorney filed for bail the next morning.

He called the incident tragic.

He called the footage incomplete.

He called Elena unstable.

That word again.

Unstable.

Elena sat in the courthouse with her bandaged arm beneath a loose sweater and listened as a stranger turned her pain into strategy.

Mara sat beside her.

Detective Cole sat behind them.

Arthur sat across the aisle with Victoria.

He looked smaller than Elena remembered.

Victoria did not look at Elena once.

Dominic appeared in a dark suit, clean-shaven, bruised only in his pride.

When he entered, his eyes found Elena.

For a second, her body remembered fear before her mind caught up.

Then Mara placed a hand on her knee.

The prosecutor played thirty seconds of the camera footage.

No one in the courtroom moved.

Dominic’s attorney objected to the audio.

The judge overruled enough to hear Dominic say, “Look what you made me do.”

Elena watched Arthur’s face.

He covered his eyes.

Victoria stared straight ahead.

After the footage, the prosecutor introduced Victoria’s hospital recording.

Be careful.

The judge looked toward Victoria.

Her face reddened.

Bail was set high.

A no-contact order was issued.

Dominic was barred from the house.

Victoria was warned against witness intimidation.

Elena expected to feel safe.

Instead, she felt exhausted.

Safety, she learned, is not a switch.

It is a door that opens slowly after being locked for years.

Outside the courtroom, Arthur approached her.

Mara stepped forward.

Elena stopped her.

Arthur’s voice shook.

“I am sorry.”

Elena looked at him.

For years, she had imagined an apology from someone in that house.

Now that it arrived, it felt smaller than she expected.

“You watched.”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You let her call it private.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“You let him call me crazy.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice did not rise.

“Then your sorry belongs in court.”

Arthur looked at her.

She turned away.

By sunset, Arthur had contacted Detective Cole.

The next morning, he gave a sworn statement about years of incidents inside the Hale house.

Victoria called him a traitor.

Arthur finally answered, “No.”
