part 6

PART 6
At the hospital, Elena expected pain.
She did not expect peace.
Not full peace.
Not yet.
But a thin kind of quiet settled around her when the nurse closed the exam room door and Dominic was not on the other side.
The burn was treated.
Photographed.
Documented.
Second-degree in places.
Painful.
Likely to scar.
The doctor asked how it happened.
Elena answered without looking at anyone else for permission.
“My husband pressed a hot pan against my arm.”
The doctor nodded and wrote it down.
No raised eyebrows.
No doubt.
No soft question about whether she was sure.
Just fact meeting paper.
Mara arrived twenty minutes later with tangled hair, mismatched shoes, and a fury so bright Elena almost smiled.
Her sister stopped in the doorway when she saw the bandage.
Then crossed the room and held Elena carefully.
“I should have come sooner.”
Elena cried then.
“I should have left sooner.”
Mara pulled back.
“No.”
“We are not starting your freedom with his vocabulary.”
Elena laughed through tears.
Then winced.
Detective Cole entered after getting permission.
He explained the charges.
Assault.
Domestic violence enhancement.
Evidence preservation.
Possible witness intimidation.
He also asked about earlier incidents.
Elena looked at Mara.
Mara nodded.
So Elena told him.
Not everything.
Not yet.
Enough.
The balcony.
The broken phone.
The wrist bruises.
The threats about her mental health.
The financial control.
The dinner where Victoria said fragile women destroy good men.
Detective Cole wrote it down.
Then asked about Arthur.
Elena hesitated.
“He never hurt me.”
Mara’s eyes flashed.
Detective Cole looked up.
“But he witnessed?”
Elena’s voice became smaller.
“Yes.”
“He witnessed.”
That was another kind of injury.
Harder to charge.
Harder to explain.
A person can wound you by turning away often enough that silence begins to feel like a hand holding you down.
Before leaving, Detective Cole said, “Your sister brought a bag.”
Elena looked confused.
Mara opened the backpack.
Clothes.
Phone charger.
Passport.
Cash.
The art portfolio journal.
Elena stared.
“How did you get that?”
Mara smiled through tears.
“You told me where it was in case you ever stopped answering.”
Elena closed her eyes.
May you like
She had been preparing to survive longer than she had allowed herself to admit.
