PART 7
Victoria called the hospital six times.
Mara blocked her on the seventh.
Then Victoria arrived in person.
Of course she did.
Women like Victoria Hale believed doors were suggestions.
She came wearing a camel coat, pearls, and grief arranged perfectly on her face.
Mara saw her first in the hallway.
“No.”
Victoria stopped.
“I need to speak with my daughter-in-law.”
Mara stepped in front of the room.
“You mean the woman your son burned while you drank wine?”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You are emotional.”
Mara laughed.
“You people love that word.”
Elena heard their voices and sat up.
Her arm throbbed beneath the bandage.
The nurse moved toward the door.
Elena said, “Let her in.”
Mara turned.
“Elena—”
“It’s okay.”
Victoria entered with the cautious dignity of a queen walking through a prison.
Her eyes flicked to the bandage, then away.
That was when Elena knew no apology was coming.
Victoria spoke softly.
“Dominic is in custody.”
Elena said nothing.
“This can still be handled.”
Mara nearly exploded, but Elena raised her uninjured hand.
Victoria continued.
“He has problems.”
“He needs treatment.”
“He needs his wife.”
Elena stared at her.
“No.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened.
“You made vows.”
“So did he.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“If you testify, you will ruin him.”
Elena looked at the woman who had raised Dominic to believe consequences were cruelty.
“He ruined himself.”
Victoria’s voice dropped.
“Be careful.”
Mara moved.
The nurse stepped in.
Elena did not flinch.
For the first time, she saw Victoria clearly.
Not elegant.
Not maternal.
A gatekeeper for violence wearing pearls.
Elena reached for her phone and pressed record.
“Say that again.”
Victoria’s face froze.
Elena held the phone up.
“The camera is not only in the kitchen anymore.”
Mara smiled.
Victoria’s mask cracked.
“You manipulative little—”
The nurse opened the door fully.
“Mrs. Hale, you need to leave.”
Victoria looked at Elena with pure hatred.
Then turned and walked out.
Elena saved the recording.
Her hands shook afterward.
Mara sat beside her.
“You were incredible.”
Elena looked at the closed door.
“No.”
May you like
“I was believed.”
