PART 3

Dominic Hale had been charming when Elena met him.

That was the part people never wanted to hear.

They wanted monsters to look like monsters from the beginning.

Dominic looked like a rescue.

He was handsome, successful, attentive, and patient in the way dangerous men can be patient while learning where every door is.

He sent flowers to Elena’s office.

Remembered her coffee order.

Praised her paintings.

Told her she was too talented to waste time as a gallery assistant.

Within six months, he convinced her to quit and “focus on art.”

Within one year, her studio account was tied to his accountant.

Within eighteen months, he said her friends were jealous.

Within two years, her sister was “toxic.”

By the third year, Elena’s world had narrowed to Dominic’s moods.

The Hale house was beautiful.

White walls.

Clean furniture.

Modern lighting.

A kitchen that looked like a magazine.

It was also a theater.

Victoria played the elegant mother.

Arthur played the quiet father.

Dominic played the misunderstood husband.

Elena was assigned the role of problem.

At family dinners, Victoria corrected Elena’s clothes.

Dominic corrected her memories.

Arthur corrected nothing.

Once, Elena dropped a plate after Dominic grabbed her arm under the table.

Victoria said, “You always make the room tense.”

Another time, Dominic locked Elena outside on the balcony for twenty minutes during winter.

He told Arthur it was a joke.

Arthur looked at Elena’s blue fingers and said, “Dominic, don’t tease her like that.”

Tease.

That word stayed with her.

It taught Elena that in the Hale family, cruelty only became cruelty when someone outside the family could see it.

So Elena made sure someone outside could see it.

She documented everything.

Photos.

Voice memos.

Emails to herself.

A journal hidden inside an old art portfolio.

Then the camera.

Her sister Mara begged her to leave.

Elena wanted to.

But Dominic had already threatened the thing he knew she loved most.

“If you walk out,” he said, “I will make sure everyone believes you are unstable.”

“And no judge will let unstable women keep anything.”

They had no children.

But he meant the house.

Her art.

Her money.

Her name.

Everything.

The night of the burned dinner, Elena finally understood something.

If she waited until she was not afraid, she would never leave.
